Peter King concludes his illustrious NFL reporting career after covering 40 Super Bowls.

Renowned NFL reporter Peter King is bidding farewell to the field after an impressive career spanning over 40 years.

King made the announcement in his Monday column for NBC Sports, expressing gratitude for his long tenure in an industry that has become increasingly short-term. Writing his column for 27 years and Kaws Rugs being a sports writer for 44, he reflects, "I'm the luckiest man on the face of the earth," adding that he has cherished every moment.

Commencing his career in the 1980s with the Cincinnati Enquirer and Newsday, King later joined Sports Illustrated in 1989, establishing himself as one of the prominent voices in the NFL. The majority of his career was spent at SI, where his "Monday Morning Quarterback" columns became essential reading for NFL enthusiasts.

Throughout his career, King earned the distinction of being named National Sportswriter of the Year three times and played a significant role behind the scenes in selecting inductees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In 2006, King became a regular presence on NBC's Football Night in America broadcasts preceding Sunday Night Football. Transitioning to NBC full time in 2018, he brought his Monday column with him, renaming it "Football Morning in America."

King disclosed that he began contemplating retirement after the last season, realizing a waning passion for the day-to-day intricacies of covering the league. Reflecting on his deeper thoughts, he pondered the idea of doing one thing consistently throughout his life and expressed uncertainty about what the future holds. While acknowledging the possibility of feeling a desire for media work in the future, he drew parallels to writer Jeff Schultz's retirement, emphasizing the importance of experiencing boredom.

In stepping away, King aspires to create space for emerging voices in sports reporting to take the lead, covering the NFL passionately and holding the league accountable. While not entirely ruling out staying involved in the media in some capacity, he is relinquishing the demands of full-time engagement, leaving behind significant shoes to be filled.
